Nurturing The Mother-Women's Health Series: Part 2: Penelope
In this series you will get the opportunity to meet 5 beautiful women and their babies (both earthside and inside), who I have been lucky enough to be entrusted in the role of naturopath during their pivotal stages of life. These women have kindly given me permission to share their stories with you. By sharing their stories this may evoke feelings of hope in you that the health of you or your loved ones can improve and even blossom.
In our second addition to the series, we will be meeting Penelope, a busy mum of two little ones who when first made contact with me was feeling depleted and deflated. However, through our sessions we were able to make significant improvements not only to her physical health but her mental outlook.
What led you to seek support from a naturopath?
I first approached Katie after having my two babies for a plethora of issues including low iron, digestive discomfort, mood swings and gynaecological problems.
I was exhausted, uncomfortable and emotional and despite my best efforts, I found nothing seemed to alleviate my ongoing symptoms.
How has the process with Katie been?
The process with Katie has been fantastic, she is endlessly supportive, sensitive and understanding. She is realistic on what’s achievable for a busy mum trying to juggle life with two small children. Katie offers such great advice on how to maintain optimal health while dealing with sleep deprivation, hormonal changes and stress.
How have you begun to weave naturopathic principles more into your life? Are there any rituals that have become a daily rhythm for you?
Since seeing Katie I prioritise my mealtimes, I slow down, I focus on nourishing myself with plenty of leafy greens, nuts, seeds, quality meat and lots of water. I try to be conscious of my appetite, take pleasure in the process of eating and really chew my food and enjoy the moment.
I consume less caffeine and instead replace my second coffee of the day with a delicious herbal tea or medicinal mushroom and cacao latte.
How has your health, body, or wellness transformed since beginning your journey?
I’ve honestly felt like a different person. I am no longer suffering as often from bouts of bloating and pain. My constant lethargy, brain fog and anxiety have decreased. I’m more energised, I’m present with my children, and I can focus on work.
I have less swelling and water retention in my body, my sleep has improved, my monthly cycle is lighter, and I can cope better with mood swings.
How has incorporating a holistic naturopathic approach to postpartum care changed your emotional or mental well-being?
Incorporating a naturopathic approach to my postpartum care has been crucial in helping improve my mental well-being. Following Katie’s recommended lifestyle plan and taking the supplements and herbs she prescribed, has significantly increased my happiness. I feel less overwhelmed, more grounded and finally can focus on enjoying this precious time with my little bambinos.
